Ideas for scraps

So, I saw these and thought they would be great to make if you have a bunch of scraps! Saw them both on the Connecting Threads website. They have a lot of cute fun stuff and if you watch they put a lot of their kits on sale!

Charming Scrappy Squares Lap Quilt

Fall in the City Lap Quilt

Just another scrappy baby quilt

I think I need to make some BOY quilts.....there's a lot of pink on here! LOL This is a baby quilt that I made from scraps from Wendi. They all coordinated and were such cute colors......this quilt practically made itself! I backed it with light green flannel and had it quilted with pink thread. So cute.....

Here is another quilt made from left-over material. I made four nine-patch squares and just rotated them. This one is  backed with white flannel. As you can see....Wendi and I like stripes on the binding. It just adds a little pizazz to the quilt.

Charlene's quilt - my favorite!

As Wendi has said, she likes to use her scraps.....so I have helped her do that! She gave me a bunch of scraps she had actually gotten from someone else. I loved the colors but couldn't figure out how to make it work. Wendi helped me pick out another fabric (the polka-dot fabric border) to go with the scraps I already had......and wah-lah.....Charlene's quilt! I love all the colors in this.....calm and soothing.

It's the same pattern as Miquel's but I put the appliqued section on the other side. It just worked better with the way I had sewn the strips together. I backed hers with minky so it is nice and soft.
We bought the material for the binding when we bought the polka-dot used on the flowers and the border. I love that it has all the colors of the quilt in it! Wendi has a great eye  for picking out unique but coordinating binding material......thank you Wendi!!

Wendi used her machine to do the applique for me (I hate doing applique!). She did a blanket stitch around each flower and leaf.

If you look closely you can see the stitch she used on the binding....it's not something you see right away but it does make it look so much better!

More Girly Quilts

Wendi made a darling quilt for someone and I loved the pattern. It had three sections, one with appliques, and two that were strips sewn together - various sizes and materials. I loved it so much I made two of them......one for Charlene and one for Miquel.

Miquel wanted something to take to college with her to put on her bed. She picked out the materials and I started it before she went to St. George. Unfortunately, I didn't finish it until almost the end of her sophomore year. But hey, that was 13 years sooner than it took me to get Sydney's quilt finished. (I still need to take pictures of hers!)

We wanted something a little different on Miquel's quilt so she could reverse it if she wanted to. We also needed something really light-weight so she could use it during the hot months in St. George. I still used the warm-n-natural batting in it.

Boys' Quilts

This one isn't quite quilted, nor bound, but I wanted to get a picture of this one. This one is one my favorites and I'll prolly just keep this one (you know...perhaps some babies will come).  I love all the bright colors and and the fun cowboy theme. I also tried out a crazy 9 patch pattern that I love too. This will just be a lap quilt. Sept. 2010

Now it's quilted and bound
I only had a couple squares left and wanted to incorporated them somehow in the back.  So I pieced the back and placed them in there.  I used it up...I'm trying to use more of my scraps.  I also used what I had for the binding...It doesn't match perfectly colorwise, but themewise it does.  And I'm using more of my scraps.  Isn't the cowboy print so cute?

Halloween Quilt

This quilt is done the same way as Jens' soccer/green/black/white quilt towards the bottom. I also love all the bright Halloween prints and how crazy the boxes are in the center of the squares. Oct. 2010
Below is a table runner using the same fabric but I didn't have enough of the blue fabric to make a whole large quilt.  Sheryl helped design this pattern and it will look stunning on my black table in the living room.  This will be the first Halloween that I will get to use them.  I'm excited that they're done BEFORE the season.

This is Christian's scout quilt that still needs to be quilted and bound. I made Ryus (my nephew) a similar one and I love how classic and clean it looks. I also love the new merit badge fabric that I was able to cut out individual merit badges that Christian earned. I also wanted to highlight the different fabric that I used on his that represent Christian. When Christian was 9 months...(Brian was away at basic training and I lived with my mom during those 3 months) ...My mom had a really super soft rug in front of her kitchen sink that he would crawl all over the house trying to find, and when he found it he would lie down with his face on it. All his life he's been a feely touchy guy of fabrics so I added a row of minky just for him that is super soft.

Jens' Tshirt quilt from Iowa and all the places that he visited while he was there playing. He even went to a showing of Wicked.  Look at him peeking out up top...

This is Ty's Tshirt quilt.

This shirt was the back of one that is already on here and I wanted to include this one, it's his own handwriting that he had to write for his PE shirt in middle school.

Here is Christian's Tshirt quilt. They are all pretty similar except that rows and columns are a little different fabric and here again the back of his quilt is special for him. It's also minky.

Backing done with stripes and a border of soccer material.

Jensen went away to Iowa without any bedding besides a sheet set (that didn't even fit, he had to buy an extra long twin size) So when we went to visit him during conference Oct. 2009 I took along this quilt to give to him. I really love this one. I had the high school quilt this one and it's pretty poorly done. One day I would like to machine quilt on my own machine. I'm trying to get up the bravery to do so.

This one is Jens' Tshirt quilt, first one that I made. I love these because they get so many tshirts for their different activities and this is a good use for them, rather then use them for kindling for our outdoor fire place.

Jens's scout quilt 2008 You can't see it very well but each of his merit badges are embroidered on the cream sections that are angled. I do LOVE the picots (triangles) on the edge of the quilt. I wasn't going to add red to the quilt because the instructions didn't call for it but I'm so glad that I did.

Girlie Quilts

A long time ago (like 4 years) I got a hankering to sew something not boyish...like PINK. I thought if I sew this who am I going to give them to? I couldn't really put a pink quilt on MY bed? could I? After I see the pictures though I really do like how they look with the logs. I decided to give them to my sister's girls since she has a lot of them. I wish I would have taken a picture of Kate's quilt...it was blue/brown/green/yellow...just lovely colors. Anyhoo...Korrine's quilt is the pink one and Kamas' quilt is the purple.
Korrine loves pink and hearts.

I made this by putting a 3" square on top of a 6" square on top of a 9" square and letting the edges fray. I love the look after I've just washed them. The back is made from houndstooth minky. I held on to the top for a long time after I had completed it and didn't have enough to make a back or binding and I was lucky enough to find a binding that matched all the colors on the front. I also love how it is diagonal.  I think I'll make another with soccer fabric.  Christian mentioned that he wanted a soccer quilt too.  The same fabric from Jensen's soccer quilt.

Kamas loves purple and fairies. My mom copied the purple fairy from the white patch of fairies and enlarged her. I added butterflies and ric-rack. This one just makes me happy. I also LOVE that the binding is using the scraps from leftover 2 1/2 strips. You can see in the above picture the different edges.  I machine bound with a decorative stitch.  This stitch takes alot of thread.

Erica's Old Jeans quilt

I used to save the kids jeans (and some of their dad's) and cut them into squares to make quilts with. Erica wanted a quilt made out of the old jeans. I didn't have enough to do an entire quilt with jeans so I purchased some plaid fat quarters to put with the denim squares. I used a variation of the around-the-world pattern alternating the gold and red plaids. Then I put two large borders on it to get it to the twin size I wanted. This one is backed with red minky....soooooo soft! I used warm-n-natural batting in it as well. It is a  great, heavy, comfy quilt! A quilt you can truly wrap yourself up in and feel warm, cozy, and loved!

Mark's UT Quilt

Wendi has made some really fun t-shirt quilts for her family...hopefully she will post them here for you to see.

Anyway, my husband graduated from University of Tennessee (UT) with a Bachelor of Music. He is a die-hard Volunteer fan! Go Orange - Go White! Good ole' rocky top....

On a visit to Knoxville last year I was able to get some "souvenier" t-shirts so that I could use them to make a t-shirt quilt. Since I didn't have enough t-shirts (you need 9-12 to make a "true" t-shirt quilt) I decided to get some music material and something orange and white to go with it. Wendi and I went to 9 different fabric stores but finally found the perfect materials!

The t-shirt squares are doubled up (two thicknesses). The rest of the sqaures and borders are just one thickness. I put a border around each square to make the quilt bigger. Since I was not using fleece on the back I put some warm-n-natural batting in it and then used orange minky as the backing. Stacy quilted a really "manly" design on it and Wendi bound it with a solid orange. I gave it to him for Christmas and he LOVES it!

Sorry, I only have one picture for now.

Sophie's Quilt

So, Charlene wanted something similar to Lena's baby quilt. She had what I thought was an odd preference of colors, however, when it was all put together it turned out to be a very beautiful quilt. The blocks are just laid out randomly - a very difficult thing to do for Charlene and me! Each block is surrounded by a black and pink striped material with a black square in each corner. The inner border is the same as one of the cream colored squares. The second border is the same material as the black corner squares. Then it was bound with the black/pink striped material. The backing is the same as one of  the pink materials in the quilt...it really tied it all together very nicely.

Once again, I had Stacy do the quilting. She did a beautiful design and it just made the quilt look so perfect! Wendi bound it for me to make a stunning finished product!

Lena's Quilt

Pam Smith made a beautiful baby quilt (fits a toddler bed) for Lena. She embroidered each square with a beautiful design - each design has hearts in it. I think she had eight different designs. It turned out amazing and is truly an heirloom piece. I had to share it here. We loved it so much that Charlene wanted one similar to it made for Sophie (watch for the next post).

Here are some pictures of Lena's quilt:

Randy's Double Irish Chain

About 15 years ago I learned how to make the double irish chain pattern. I loved it so much I decided to make the twin size quilts with the same design (different color schemes), for each of my three oldest children. This is the one I made for Randy...it only took me 15 years to complete it. In the process I lost one of the squares so I purchased some red material that would match and made each of the corners red. I backed it with navy blue minky....love, love, love minky! And of course, I used warm-n-natural batting. Once again, Stacy quilted it for me and Wendi bound it for me. It's a nice cozy quilt with some weight to it. Wonderful for winter nights.
